Brain Brazil Vol. 1
The Roots of Brazilian Metal

Introduction

"It could be said that the history of Brazilian metal started way back in the late sixties and beginning of the seventies. Bands like "Mutantes", "Terço", "Som Nosso de Cada Dia", "Made in Brazil", "Patrulha do Espaço", "Peso", "Casa das Maquinas", "Terreno Baldio", "Joelho de Porco", "Bicho da Seda", among many others, all started the rock scene rolling there. The band "Mutantes" is still today, regarded by many people as the most creative Brazilian band of all time. Back then Brazilian musicians were influenced by the same international acts (specially the British bands), events and films responsible for shaping the heads of the young generation world wide. Living under a military government and heavy censorship, these were very difficult times for the Brazilian people. To be an artist then could cost you your life... Later, coinciding with the British New Wave of Heavy Metal we had an explosion of rock bands. The city of São Paulo was the centre and still is, of all activities. São Paulo is undoubtedly the South American capital of rock. In this industrial crowded city, in small theatres and clubs the underground scene flourished and provided opportunities for Heavy Metal bands to show their talents. Without any support from the media and with production costs in a country suffering from very high rates of inflation running absurdly out of proportion, to be a rock band was a real challenge. Another problem was the lack of good professionals. The engineers and sound technicians did not have enough experience to deal with rock music. Because of this, our bands were treated like guinea pigs and the quality of their albums were always far from good. Regardless, bands like "Avenger", "Korzus", "Viper", "A Chave do Sol", "Excalibur", "Virus", "Salario Minimo", "Cerbero", "Dorsal Atlantica", "Centurias", "Karisma", "Vodu", "Platina", "Vulcano", "Santuario" and, of course "Sepultura", came out to prove that rock can survive against all adversities. These bands are just a few examples of the second generation of Brazilian bands. Today, the Brazilian economic situation is much better and hundreds of bands are playing everywhere. Unfortunately, most of the Brazilian press are still deaf and blind. However, when CD production costs became cheaper, several independent labels brought out the best of our bands. This compilation is just a small sample of what is going on in Brazil at the moment. I hope you enjoy it."
